The last time Australia were scheduled to take on Sri Lanka in a World Cup match in Colombo was in 1996, when Australia pulled out citing security concerns leading to plenty of rancour even before the tournament started. Sri Lanka would look to bounce back after their morale-sapping loss to Pakistan and avenge their 2003 edition defeat at the hands of Kenya when they take on the African associate nation in their ICC Cricket World Cup Group A match on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka, tipped as one of the title contenders, lost to Pakistan by 11 runs on Saturday and they would look to lift their morale with a big win against Kenya at the R Premadasa Stadium.

They have also got the boost ahead of Tuesday's match with fast bowler Lasith Malinga available for selection after sitting out of Sri Lanka's last two matches due to a sore back.

Sri Lanka can ill-afford to take their opponents lightly, though Kenya had suffered heavy defeats at the hands of New Zealand and Pakistan in their last two matches and facing internal division with differences between their coach Eldine Baptiste and senior players.

Against the Kiwis, Kenya were bowled out for 69 runs, their lowest total in ODI cricket, and then Pakistan thrashed them by 205 runs at Hambantota.

However, the last time Sri Lanka and Kenya met in a World Cup encounter was in 2003 and the Africans had stunned the 1996 champions on that occasion with an upset win in Nairobi.

Understandably, Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss warned his players not to be complacent.

"The fact that we did not win our last game will stop any complacency. Our guys are consciously aware of playing good cricket and we certainly will not take them lightly," Bayliss said.

He said Malinga was able to bowl full steam at the nets on Monday and he would be available for selection.

"Lasith bent over to pick up a cricket ball about two weeks ago and strained his back a little. The physio said that the first two weeks were the most important after his injury as the most likelihood of him re-injuring was that period. He bowled in the last two practice sessions. He has bowled with a full run-up today and batted and fielded.

We have a selection meeting in the evening and will decide what to do then," Baylisss said.

Kenya, on the other hand, are facing trouble ahead of their all-important match with reports of differences between players and coach emerging.

Cricket Kenya chief Samir Inamdar on Sunday blamed differences between the players and West Indian coach Eldine Baptiste for their lacklustre performances so far.

Kenyan captain Jimmy Kamande, however, dismissed suggestions that there was disunity within the squad and promised a better performance on Tuesday.

"I also read those reports. I have not spoken to the chairman, but I can tell you that my team is very solid. When a team loses people try to find excuses. The thing is we have not performed and we want to play well," Kamande told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

"Obviously Sri Lanka are a solid side. But we have nothing to lose. They are the ones who are under pressure to perform. Having lost to Pakistan, this makes a must win game for them and we will try and put pressure on them," Kamande added.

Umar Gul, however, held his nerve to steer Pakistan home and end a mesmeric exhibition of high-quality cricket in Colombo

Pakistan’s innings had everything: rapid start, brain fade, tranquil middle overs, fabulous end-over bowling from Muttiah Muralitharan, who gave only five runs from two batting Powerplay overs, and finally a Misbah blitz, with 32 runs flowing from the final three overs, which eventually made the difference.

The chase too nearly had it all: two inspired moments bursting with imagination and skill from Shoaib and Afridi, two failed stumpings, a dropped catch and a late surge from Silva, who woke up too late after a painstaking start.

The build-up and hype ahead of this match has been huge and we are still barely into the second week of the World Cup. This was always going to be one of the marquee clashes of the tournament, and even though it has been moved away from Eden Gardens to the slightly less daunting Chinnaswamy Stadium, that hasn’t dulled the anticipation. You only need to see the unfortunate pictures from outside the ground during the week, as locals rushed for tickets, to know how desperate they are to watch their team.

However, there are two sides taking part and England are insisting they can use the expectation being piled on to the hosts in their favour. From a purely cricket view, the stadium switch won’t have disappointed Andrew Strauss’s team because, both on and off the field in Bangalore, conditions will be slightly less hostile than could have been the case in Kolkata.

Yet England’s record against India in their own backyard makes for grim reading. They have won one of their last 13 completed ODIs in the country, going back to the 5-1 drubbing in 2006 and the 5-0 scoreline in 2008, before the series was cancelled due to the Mumbai bombings. In between they were also thrashed at the 2006 Champions Trophy. On one hand the odds say they are due a win, but on the other the statistics make damning reading. The public sale of tickets for the next Sunday’s (February 27) will commence on February 24 from 8 am onwards. The tickets, one per head, will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis at various gates.

However, the KSCA has also said that limited number of tickets will be on sale owing to the obligations and commitments made by the state association to ICC, BCCI, Cricket Association of Bengal and the touring English fans. It may be recalled that the India-England match was scheduled at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata before ICC expressed dissatisfaction over the facilities there and moved the match out of the venue. Later, the match was awarded to Bangalore.

“We had to deal with the prebooked tickets for the England match. So around 8,000 to 10,000 tickets will be on sales for public for the England-India match,” said KSCA spokesperson Sujith Somasundar.

Sri Lanka Team Squad Announced For ICC World Cup 2011

Sri Lanka Team Cricket Board  announced selection of a 15-member squad for the upcoming 2011 Cricket World Cup. Fomer Captain Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas not included.

ICC World Cup 2011: England’s World Cup squad announced

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced their 15 man squad on Wednesday for the 2011 World Cup, that is scheduled to begin from 19th of February in the sub-continent.

Matt Prior was named as the squad’s wicketkeeper. Prior’s inclusion in the squad comes as a surprise as he is recalled in the squad after being out of the team for ten months.

Prior’s inclusion in the squad means that he replaces Surrey’s Steve Davies who was expected to go to the subcontinent. He has been in the current One Day squad that is touring Australia. Davies has been performing fairly well with the gloves, scoring 42 runs off 35 balls, although after having four chances in the first ODI in Melbourne. However, the selectors threw in a surprise by making another change behind the stumps.

Andy Flower, the team manager said that it was a “tough” decision to pick Prior as “Davies was picked in our last one-day series and he did okay against Pakistan.”

He explained that Prior was selected due to the sub-continent conditions. He also stated that Prior will be joining the current England squad in Hobart, Australia, where they will be playing their second ODI on Friday. Davies will be staying back in Australia as a back-up for Prior.

“We want Prior to get a few games under his belt before we get out there,” Flower told the media.

Prior, who played in the domestic Twenty20 tournament for Victoria, will be joining the England squad in Hobart to take part in the practice session.

The 28 year old wicketkeeper will be working to strike an opening partnership with Captain Andrew Strauss where he had struggled hard, before losing his place in the team since March 2010.

Prior, who was the part of England’s successful Ashes team, averages just 25.38 in the limited overs format. However, Flower expressed confidence in his abilities saying that he is an aggressive cricketer.

The rest of the 15 man squad was as expected with pace bowler Ajmal Shahzad making the cut. The Kent off-spinner, James Tredwell has been named as the back-up for Graeme Swann who is out of action for up to two weeks due to a knee injury.

Paul Collingwood was back in the squad even though he was omitted in the recent squad for Australia.

“His experience, ODI knowledge, and skills across all three facets of the game make him a valuable member of the squad and he’ll be looking to make a big impact at another global event,” the national selector, Geoff Miller stated.

Luke Wright retained his spot and Stuart Broad returned to the bowling stock of England after recovering from a stomach injury that he suffered during the Ashes series.

Miller said that the Board and the coach are satisfied with the squad and was confident that the squad had the depth to face the challenges that will be put forward during the tournament that runs till April.
