South Africa vs West Indies Cricket World Cup 2011 Preview

NEW DELHI is ready to welcome guests from South Africa and West Indies for the seventh match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, which will be played at Delhi's historical Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Thursday, February 24. Both South Africa and West Indies, who feature in the group 'B' teams, will start their ICC Cricket World cup 2011 campaign with this match.

South Africa, one of the strongest contenders of the world's biggest cricketing event, have never won tournament. Whereas, West Indies lifted the Cricket World Cup trophy last time 32 years back in the 1979 World Cup.

In the 50 ODIs played between South Africa and West Indies, the Proteas have won 37 times and the Caribbeans tasted victory 12 times. Both the teams had met four times in the Cricket World Cup and won two times each, and interestingly, all four matches have been won by the team batting first.

South African captain Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis and Jacques Kallis can change the match any time in their favour. In the bowling department Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe can destroy any batting line-up. South Africans are equally balanced in the fielding department. In the last five matches, the Proteas have won four matches and lost one against India.

Prior to the Cricket World Cup 2011, West Indies won one warm-up match against Kenya by 61 runs and lost to Sri Lanka by four wickets in the second warm-up match. The West Indian batting mainly depends on Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul. However, Darren Bravo and Kieron Pollard are very useful players for the side.

Here is the squad of South Africa and West Indies for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011:

South Africa: Graeme Smith (capt), Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, AB de Villiers (wk), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Morne van Wyk (wk).

West Indies: Darren Sammy (Capt), Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Smith, Sulieman Benn, Nikita Miller, Andre Rusell, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kirk Edwards, Devon Thomas (wk).

This World Cup game will be a day-night encounter and will see the two sides meet in the World Cup cricket games for the fifth time. Both have won two games.

The West Indies team will look to depend on their batsmen to deliver the goods. This will be because the West Indian bowling is not too strong and it will need the likes of Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard to strike hard when it really matters.

Of course, the experience of Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul will also count for a lot.

South Africa will need to rely on the batting of Hashim Amla, who has been their best batsman in the last one year or so. With Jacques Kallis back from injury, things are looking good for the South Africa side, who will depend on the pair of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel for a win. England vs. Netherlands - ICC World Cup 2011 match preview

After exuberantly cherishing their 3-2 Ashes win, suffering a 1-6 One Day International (ODI) series drubbing, and maligning their hectic FTP (Future Tour Programme) and lengthy World Cup schedule, England’s cricket team are all set to kick off their ICC 2011 World Cup campaign.

The Poms will take on the Netherlands tomorrow at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha in Nagpur.

England will experiment their roaring gun, Kevin Pietersen, as an opener in what would be a mismatched World Cup game.

The South Africa-born attacking batsman is the best natural stroke player in England’s squad. The 30-year old Natal batsman is well capable of batting 50-overs on his day.

There isn't much to compare when it comes to the performance of both sides in the past as England is one of the World Cup favourites, while Peter Borren’s side stands among the tournament outsiders.

But England must have their 4-wicket mauling at the hands of Oranje brigade in the 2009 World Twenty20 Championship opener at Lord’s on their minds.

Strauss himself said that they would not take Holland as an easy opposition.

"It underlines the point that you can't under-estimate sides like Holland” said the England captain on Monday. "If we are 10 per cent off and they have a good day, we are in trouble", he added.

Six players, who played were part of that Twenty20 triumphant squad, including, Peter Borren, Bas Zuiderent, Pietar Seelaar, Alex Kerevezee, Ryan ten Doeschate and Tom de Grooth, are also part of this time’s World Cup squad and must be eager to emulate their World Twenty20 showing in the 50-overs mega event.

The focus of the World Twenty20 champions would, undoubtedly, be on their star batsman, KP (Kevin Pietersen), who would be seen in a new position, as opener with captain, Andrew Strauss.

The damage that the Natal-born batsman can cause to any bowling attack during restrictions could be nastiest nightmare a bowler could have. And he would obviously be hoping to exploit fielding restrictions in the power-plays.

While England will be missing the likes of Eion Morgan, who was ruled out of the World Cup squad with an injured finger just a week before the esteemed event, a lot would depend on how Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior and Ravi Bopara perform in the middle overs.

England are expected to field the same playing XI, which featured in the warm-up games except for off-spinner Graeme Swann, who is likely to replace Michael Yardy.

The Stuart Broad spearheaded pace brigade would include Tim Bresnan and James Anderson.

To Netherlands, the only injury concern is their regular skipper, Peter Borren, battling a side strain. If Borren fails to prove fitness on Tuesday morning, he would be replaced by Bas Zuiderent as stand-in captain.

In Borren’s absence much would depend on the all-round prowess of Ryan ten Doeschate. Tom de Grooth would also be a vital cog in Netherland’s batting line-up.

England seemed out of flair against Canada in their opening warm-up game as they survived a scare, winning by only 16 runs.

However, their 69-run win against Pakistan in their second and last preparatory game would give them a boost ahead of their Cup opener.

The Jamtha track seems to be a batting wicket as the World Cup practice match between the Black Caps and Ireland saw almost 600 runs being put on the board by both sides. Hence winning the toss and batting first would be best.

Under usual conditions, this game would have passed by without being noticed by anybody barring English fans. But given the side’s sudden plunging form, Tuesday’s game would be crucial for Strauss and his men to gain some much needed momentum before heading to Karnataka to take on a strong Indian outfit in their second Cup fixture on 27 February.

Batting stalwart Jacques Kallis was named in South Africa's World Cup squad on Tuesday

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) -Injured Kallis named in South Africa World Cup squad.Batting stalwart Jacques Kallis was named in South Africa's World Cup squad on Tuesday despite missing the current series against India due to a rib injury.

"Jacques is undergoing ongoing treatment but it's a week-by-week thing. I'm confident though that he will be fit for the World Cup," team doctor Mohamed Moosajee told a news conference on Tuesday.

Kallis's presence will bolster a South African batting line-up which has struggled in the last two matches against India. The 35-year-old all-rounder is also a top-class seam bowler, allowing the team to play a specialist batsman at seven.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Morne van Wyk, who smashed South Africa's quickest Twenty20 half-century two weeks ago, is the only other player named who was not part of the squad for the first three one-day internationals against India.

Twenty-one-year-old batsman David Miller, who played in the first two ODIs against India, was left out of the squad for the tournament on the sub-continent which starts next month.

CONTROVERSIAL OMISSION

Veteran wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who is still a senior member of the test team, was also a controversial omission, although his last limited-overs international was in the West Indies in June.

South Africa's middle-order problems meant Faf du Plessis, who scored a defiant 60 on Tuesday on his ODI debut, was preferred to Miller.

Imran Tahir, the Pakistan-born leg-spinner who has been in marvellous form in domestic cricket, was included although he is yet to play in the current series.

"We think Tahir is a unique talent but it has been difficult for him to play in this series because it is difficult to play two spinners in South African conditions, but we hope to start him soon," convenor of selectors Andrew Hudson said.

South Africa are trying to improve a miserable record at World Cups, where they have usually been among the favourites but have never progressed beyond the semi-finals, often finding bizarre ways of exiting cricket's premier one-day tournament.

They will play India, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland and the Netherlands in Group B.

Kallis, captain Graeme Smith, AB de Villiers and Robin Peterson were members of the team humiliated by eventual champions Australia in the 2007 semi-finals.

Squad - Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Johan Botha, Wayne Parnell, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Robin Peterson, Imran Tahir, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Morne van Wyk.
